Masonic Hall part of Blackpool’s Renaissance
Visitors to Blackpool over the last few months, watched the local television news, or seen the latest addition of the BBC’s Antique Road show will have noticed a great deal of rebirth in and around the town.
The famous landmark of Blackpool Tower is undergoing a complete refurbishment, as are the internal sections of the Tower buildings in preparation for the influx of this year’s summer visitors and for this autumn’s Illuminations. The seafront, promenade, tramway and many side streets have also undergone considerable change with modernisation making the areas more pedestrian friendly.
Some of the structural damage
Not to be out-done and in keeping with its ongoing plan of updating and modernisation is Blackpool Masonic Hall in Adelaide Street which is to be found just behind the town’s celebrated Winter Gardens. The Masonic Hall has recently been honoured and recognised with a Blue Plaque from Blackpool Heritage Society and the hall committee is now putting into fruition its plans to bring the hall up to modern day standards. Colin Goodwin, the Masonic hall’s president, said: “Last year we undertook a major project to modernise the interior of this beautiful building, but during our survey we found that there were major structural problems. The roof needed to be stripped and replaced. Also in certain parts of the building the bay windows were separating from the main building and these problems needed to be addressed immediately. With the approval of the hall committee work is now well underway to repair and renovate the building. Our aim is to make our Masonic hall one that the Freemasons of the Fylde coast can be proud of and make it the jewel in the crown of the Province of West Lancashire”.
