Blackpool Group of Lodges

A Story of the Smiths

Emblem Lodge No 6727 held an initiation ceremony at the Masonic Hall, Blackpool, which might have given the lodge secretary something of a problem identifying all the participants – a great number of whom were called Smith - in his minutes.

The initiate was Paul John Stonehouse Smith. Paul is the fourth generation Mason from his family to join the Craft as his grandfather and great grandfather were past masters of Harmony and Industry Lodge No 381 which meets at Darwen.  His grandfather David Stonehouse Smith held the very distinguished position of Assistant Provincial Director of Ceremonies and can be seen pictured in a splendid photograph on display at the Darwen Masonic Hall. This was taken in 1932 when the Grand Master of the English Constitution visited Darwen.

The initiation ceremony was carried out by both Gordon Smith and Ian Smith in the presence of 55 brethren including Ian Robertson Chairman of the Blackpool Group of Lodges, who complimented the brethren on a first class ceremony.  The Masonic apron was presented to Paul by his father, Peter. Smiths in attendance were; Ian Smith, uncle; David Alan Smith, also uncle; Steve Smith, Group Mentor; Gordon Smith, WM; Peter Smith, father.  JD Mick Fisher who conducted Paul very ably round the lodge tentatively got in on the gathering of Smiths as he is a lock SMITH by profession.

As is the tradition at Emblem Lodge, the lodge ladies, 32 in total, also dined at the Masonic Hall.
