When Lucy Bradley, contacted the West Lancashire Freemasons about a donation to help her teach children in Tanzania, the Grant Executives were only too pleased to help.

Lucy’s project is based in the small village of Nkwawayngya in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. A generous gift of £400 was duly handed over.

On her return to the United Kingdom Lucy, who hails from Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, said the trip had been a very challenging one. Tanzania is a very poor country with high levels of poverty and unemployment, also a large portion of the population have to survive on a dollar a day.

Up to 80 per cent of the country is unemployed due to lack of funding from the government. Also the level of healthcare and education is sadly inadequate as these two important items have to be paid for; many of the local children do not receive secondary education.

During her stay in Africa, Lucy taught English and some basic First Aid, but was quick to add that facilities were sadly lacking. They needed a lot more help with better teaching equipment. The school was even without running water.

Jim Woods, who is the Regional Care Officer and a member of the West Lancashire Freemasons Charity Grant Executives, said that the Committee always gave a very careful consideration to ALL applications.

They do not have to have Masonic connections, as a great deal of our donations go to NON-Masonic Charities. Jim added that if anyone wanted further information regarding the West Lancs Charity he would be only too happy for people to contact him.
