| No matter how secure and
confident we all feel that it will never happen to us and ours, the
truth is that it does, all over the North West of England and with
startling regularity.
Flying three and four missions a day on average (over 1000 in the last eighteen months) and covering an area of some 5000 square miles stretching from Cheshire to Cumbria the Northwest Air Ambulance is a vitally important part of the network of Emergency Services which in this modern age we cannot do without. Combining the not inconsiderable skill and experience of the pilots in calmly negotiating such obstacles as hazardous power lines, trees, lamp posts and all the clutter of a modern and busy environment with a dedicated team of highly qualified paramedics, the Air Ambulance is quickly able to reach the scene of what might be considered otherwise inaccessible places such as woods, beaches, mountain areas, docks, golf courses and the like. Providing emergency medical care at the scene and subsequent hospital admission with the "Golden Hour" is recognised to greatly improve patient survival and recovery. A Bolkow 105 DBS Helicopter with a top speed of 120 knots, fully equipped to carry two patients and all the necessary equipment to cope with every imaginary emergency costs an awful lot of money, approximately £300 per hour in fact, to keep in the air. The Northwest Air Ambulance is a registered charity, and with no Government backing all of its funds are raised by donations or sponsorship from companies, organisations and individuals alike. With an annual operating cost of approximately £720,000 this is quite a feat in itself. The Automobile Association funding for the May 2001 to May 2002 is £302,000 leaving a shortfall of approximately £400,000. Want to help? Good, because it could easily be you or I or a member of our family who could need this valuable service. Please take part in this years sponsored walk and encourage as many people, Freemasons or not to join us in raising as much money as possible for this excellent cause. Even if people do not want to take part in the walk, donations will be thankfully received and faithfully applied. So come and join in, fill in a form, collect some sponsors and enjoy a wonderful day out with your friends and family and help a good cause at the same time. Your involvement may help to save lives. Thank you for your support.
