James Leishman Barclay. 60th, Celebration.

(Terry Hudson, Confused)

James Leishman Barclay was born on the 18th, April, 1926, in Glasgow. His nephew was Archie Kirkwood, the Liberal Democrat M.P. Who was made a Knight of the realm before being elevated to Baron Kirkwood of Kirkhope.

During the war years Jim was engaged on the Clyde, in the repair and maintenance of Royal and Merchant Vessels.

In 1952 he married Jean, with whom he lived happily for over 55 years.

In the late 1980s, Jim and his family moved to Blackpool. He became a Director of the Tower Taxi Group before transferring over to Streamline Taxis also as a Director.

His Masonic career started at the age of 23 when in May 1949 he became a Freemason being proposed into Lodge Alexandre in Dennistoun, Glasgow. He then in 1991 joined Kilgrimol Lodge, and in 1997 became a joining member of Symphony Lodge .4924.

Becoming Worshipful Master in 2004, also at a recent meeting in September he was elected an Honorary Member.

During his presentation, Terry Hudson said that he was still very confused with regards to the derivation of Jim’s birth name, Leishman.

He explained that it has been a Scottish custom for boys to take their fathers mothers maiden name, and for girls to take their mothers fathers name. (Apparently so as not to lose them)

If anyone is still confused please do not contact Terry.
