Blackpool Rock for new
Provincial Grand Master
for Herefordshire
|
At the Installation and Investiture of the new Provincial Grand Master for Herefordshire, on Wednesday 29th May 2002 in the Shire Hall, a small deputation from Blackpool in West Lancashire made a special trip to be present on that occasion. Apart from the privilege of being in attendance at such a splendid event, the brethren from Blackpool had a rather unusual reason to be there. The new P.G.M. is R. W. Bro. Rodney Clive Smallwood, whose hometown is Blackpool, is a "Sandgrun'un" and the West Lancashire Brethren had a surprise in store for him Several months ago, the Chairman of the South Blackpool Group, W.Bro. William T. Eardley, P.A.G.D.C., conceived the novel idea of having some Blackpool Rock specially made to present to W.Bro. Smallwood on the day of his Installation....... but this rock would be unique. Instead of it being the usual red and white, with BLACKPOOL running through it, this would be in masonic blue and white with the word HEREFORDSHIRE replacing BLACKPOOL. W.Bro Eardley arranged for one extra large piece to be made for W.Bro. Smallwood himself, and a sufficient number of regular size pieces for all the brethren who would be in attendance. Prior to the ceremony which was due to start at 3.15 p.m., a luncheon was held at the Three Counties Hotel, Hereford, and just before it commenced W.Bro. Smallwood was presented with his rock by W.Bro J. Philip Dawson, I.P.M. of Emblem Lodge No 6727 in Blackpool, who is the current Master of Vaga Lodge No 3146 (W.Bro Smallwood's Mother Lodge in Hereford)

The photograph which was taken by W.Bro. Anton Attard, shows W.Bro. Smallwood holding the giant stick of HEREFORDSHIRE ROCK, together with the brethren from West Lancashire (from left): W.Bro's K. G. Buckley, E. Gavan, W. Hotchkiss (Master of Emblem Lodge), P. J. Hadfield, R. C. Smallwood, J. P. Dawson, B. F. Sandall, & T. Scholes
Unfortunately, however, W.Bro. Eardley who had been the instigator of this tribute, and had arranged for the rock to be produced by a local Blackpool Rock manufacturer, was unable to be present due to his being in hospital on the very day of the ceremony, and which he had so looked forward to attending.
